What are the benefits of sea swimming?

Great question! All of us at SeaSure have a love of sea swimming as we find it gives us a buzz and an all-round ‘feel good’ feeling. There’s evidence emerging all the time about the benefits of being in the sea for both physical and mental health. We’ll cover more of this during the course.

I’m not a strong swimmer. Will I be safe?

Safety is our number one priority at SeaSure. There will always be at least one lifeguard per session plus an experienced sea swimming coach, all with first aid qualifications and safety equipment. There will also be other experienced sea swimmers involved in the sessions.

Courses start off in a classroom and then move to a swimming pool before going into the sea. There’s no pressure to swim and we let participants take the experience at their own pace.

How good do I need to be at swimming?

For your safety, you need to be able to swim 50m in a swimming pool without stopping.

How far will I swim?

The course is not designed to be a training session or test how far you can swim, but is focused on the enjoyment of being in open water.  We’ll encourage you to make decisions about what feels right for you depending on the conditions and how you are feeling at the time. In the early sessions, we’ll be focusing on safety skills so won’t be swimming very far at all.

What about the weather?

We all know the British weather is known for its unpredictability. We’ll do a weather check on each day of the course. If conditions are too rough in the sea or if the weather looks truly awful, we may make other plans or postpone the session.

What temperature will the sea be?

Although the sea in Brighton can get as cold as 4 degrees, we only run the courses in the summer months so the temperature is likely to be between 15 and 21 degrees celsius.

What equipment do I need?

We provide wetsuits, swim hats and gloves, so all you’ll need to bring is your own swimming costume, towel and some warm clothes and a woolly hat to put on after your swim. We also provide warm drinks afterwards.

What if I get frightened?

As experienced sea swimmers ourselves, we know that being in the sea can be a bit daunting at times. Our team is always there to make sure everyone is safe, supported and is feeling comfortable in this new environment.

If you do get frightened the SeaSure team will be on hand to talk you through it.

Will my health issues be a problem?

We ask all participants to fill in a confidential health questionnaire at the start of the course. If we have any questions about your health, we’ll discuss these with you.
